When Mylo Xyloto came out a mere three days ago, I, like many Coldplay obsessives, already knew at least half of the album in some form or another. But that didn’t stop me from getting goosebumps the first time I heard the opening trills of Mylo Xyloto coming through my stereo speakers at high volume. I’m not even going to pretend to write a “review” of this album, because I’m painfully aware of the fact that when it comes to this band, I am incapable of listening with an impartial ear. I love Coldplay and am predisposed to love everything they do. I do not love everything they do indiscriminately; I definitely have my critiques of each album, and MX is no different.
That said, as of right now, I kind of sort of love Mylo Xyloto. I’ve been listening to it virtually non-stop over the last three days and have found something new that catches my attention every time- the delivery of a particular lyric, an interesting bass line, or a previously unnoticed guitar flourish. It is, to me, an album bursting with color, inspiration, and beauty. Listening to it the other day, I realized that one of the things I love most about it is that it takes you through a whole range of emotional landscapes- from exuberant to forlorn to hopeful- and the atmosphere and tone of each song beautifully compliment those emotions. I absolutely adore Parachutes, but I think it lacks that emotional range. Where Parachutes is painted in muted tones, Mylo is every color of the rainbow times 10.
Yes, it definitely has a distinct pop leaning, but I don’t necessarily see this as a bad thing. I am a firm believer that good music is good music, regardless of what “genre” it falls into. I have never been a Rihanna fan, in fact, I think the only song I know by her is Umbrella, and that’s only because I went out of my way to listen to it once. But I really think her duet with Chris on Princess of China is well done. I certainly can’t deny the fact that I’ve been going around singing the song in my head for the last three days, and I’m NOT ANNOYED BY THAT FACT. (really. that isn’t sarcasm.)
Though I like the new beats, rhythms and bass incorporated into POC, ETIAW and Paradise, my favorite songs on the album are more in keeping with the traditional definition of Coldplay. U.F.O., Us Against the World, and Up With the Birds are the standouts for me. UWTB is probably my favorite right now.
As for the aspects I’m not in love with, I think some of the musical interludes aren’t really necessary, though some work well. Also, unlike most of the world, I’m not completely in love with Up in Flames. It’s nice, but that’s about it for me. I’ve seen a lot of people complain about the “overproduction” of the album. At first, I was put-off a bit by the distortion applied to some of Chris’ vocals, particularly in Hurts Like Heaven and Major Minus. But, now I really feel that in both cases, the effect is in keeping with the spirit of the song. This is especially true of Major Minus. It’s that sinister, big brother-like presence that’s embodied in the song and the vocals really add to that feeling. As for general “overproduction”, yes, it certainly is very produced. But again, I really think they were trying to create a very distinct atmosphere and sense of place for this music. And, for me at least, they definitely succeeded.
From the time I had control of my own tape deck (probably around 6th grade) I have been making mix tapes. Those early ones were, of course, on actual cassette tapes, and usually consisted of music choppily recorded off of the radio. Then came tape to tape mixes, which were a true labor of love. They would take me forever, but I loved making them. Finally, CD to tape mixes. That, my friends, revolutionized my mixtape making. I made them for friends, for boys and for every mood I might ever find myself in. So when I found 8tracks.com, my heart leapt for joy. Now I can easily queue the songs I want to use and share it with ANYONE! I definitely didn’t need another instrument of time-suckage in my life, but as those go, this one is fabulous. Plus, I get the added benefit of being exposed to new songs and artists through other user’s mixes. Love it. Come visit me if you get a chance!
This kind of surprised me as I heard Dead Hearts very early this year (on Chuck, has awesome music) and I assumed that I was coming to the Stars party late. Apparently not as the official video for Dead Hearts has just been released. It’s a beautiful video for an even more beautiful…
Dead Hearts- Stars
It’s been a year since their fantastic album The Five Ghosts came out, so it’s a little surprising that they’re just now releasing this video. Still, it’s quite lovely.
Day Late Snow Patrol Sunday Song of the Day- Lifeboats
Got too busy to post yesterday, but felt the need to post some Snow Patrol today. I was listening to a random Snow Patrol mix on my headphones last night. I’d forgotten how wonderful it can be to completely immerse yourself in the music like that.
Look at earth from outer space Everyone must find the place Give me time and give me space Give me real, don’t give me fake
Give me strength, reserve control Give me heart and give me soul Give me time give us a kiss Tell me your own Politik
Open up your eyes Open up your eyes Open up your eyes Open up your eyes
Give me one, cause one is best And in confusion, confidence Give me peace of mind and trust And don’t forget the rest of us Give me strength, reserve control Give me heart and give me soul Wounds that heal and cracks that fix tell me your own politik
Open up your eyes Open up your eyes Open up your eyes Open up your eyes Just open up your eyes
And give me love over, love over, love over this And give me love over, love over, love over this
TOO LONG. You can order it via their website, though, to be shipped in November :) That’s my plan, even though it’s slightly more expensive.
Yes, I’m definitely going to pre-order, though I hadn’t thought of doing it through their website. I pre-ordered Tired Pony from amazon.co.uk, and that worked out well, and not too much more expensive, so I just may do that again. No way I’m waiting til January.
BUT, I kind of hate to do that, because it takes away (ever so slightly) from their US sales. :/
Song of the Day- Kick Drum Heart- The Avett Brothers
So, my BFF/Concert Buddy and her BFF are on the guest list for The Avett Brothers show in Austin this weekend. I am not. She didn’t want to tell me, because she thought I’d be mad. Have you ever heard such ridiculousness? Of course I’m mad! :P No, not mad, just envious. But I hope they have a fabulous time. Tell the Brothers “Hello” for me, will you girls? x
Typically, this wouldn’t be a big deal, but I have very specific needs for this costume.
My family throws an annual Halloween party at which everyone dresses up, adults and kids. Yes, kids. So, this costume needs to not have the word “Sexy” in its description. Also, I’ll be doing the cooking for this soiree, so no long, trailing, gauzy material, please. Ideally, I would not be a witch, angel, or pumpkin. Also, it’d be great if I could actually look cute. OH! and it needs to not cost a ton or require any type of sewing.
