Curve Away

I'm Jen, a 30-something, music-loving mommy living in the coolest city in Texas.

About this blog:
Music, life, and more music. I love all kinds of music, but my taste seems to be more alternative/indie/folkish these days. That said, my favorite bands are as mainstream as they come. Coldplay and Snow Patrol feature heavily on this blog, so if you're not a fan of them, you may want to avoid me on Saturdays and Sundays.

I also have a health/fitness/exercise blog: move-eat-behappy.tumblr.com . Check it out if you like. :)

My musical preferences, according to my last.fm: I'm into indie, alternative, rock, folk and acoustic, including:
Coldplay, Snow Patrol, Band of Horses, Mumford & Sons, The Strokes, Death Cab for Cutie, The Swell Season, The Beatles, Tired Pony, Arcade Fire, R.E.M., Muse, The Avett Brothers, Stars, The Civil Wars, Metric, Ra Ra Riot, Travis, Noah And The Whale, Freelance Whales, Quiet Company, Florence + The Machine, Two Door Cinema Club, Vampire Weekend, Iron & Wine, The National, U2, Blind Pilot, Keane, Andrew Bird, Editors, Damien Rice, Ray LaMontagne, Phoenix, Glen Hansard, Fleet Foxes, The Shins, Jeff Buckley, Radiohead, The xx, Feist, Broken Bells, The Temper Trap, Spoon, The Sundays, The Black Keys, English Chamber Orchestra, Imogen Heap, Regina Spektor, The Cure.

“To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening.” R.E.M. In their own words: The guys share their thoughts on why now. MIKE “During our last tour, and while making Collapse Into Now and putting together this greatest hits retrospective, we started asking ourselves, ‘what next’? Working through our music and memories from over three decades was a hell of a journey. We realized that these songs seemed to draw a natural line under the last 31 years of our working together.“We have always been a band in the truest sense of the word. Brothers who truly love, and respect, each other. We feel kind of like pioneers in this—there’s no disharmony here, no falling-outs, no lawyers squaring-off. We’ve made this decision together, amicably and with each other’s best interests at heart. The time just feels right.” MICHAEL “A wise man once said—‘the skill in attending a party is knowing when it’s time to leave. We built something extraordinary together. We did this thing. And now we’re going to walk away from it. “I hope our fans realize this wasn’t an easy decision; but all things must end, and we wanted to do it right, to do it our way. “We have to thank all the people who helped us be R.E.M. for these 31 years; our deepest gratitude to those who allowed us to do this. It’s been amazing.” PETER “One of the things that was always so great about being in R.E.M. was the fact that the records and the songs we wrote meant as much to our fans as they did to us. It was, and still is, important to us to do right by you. Being a part of your lives has been an unbelievable gift. Thank you. “Mike, Michael, Bill, Bertis, and I walk away as great friends. I know I will be seeing them in the future, just as I know I will be seeing everyone who has followed us and supported us through the years. Even if it’s only in the vinyl aisle of your local record store, or standing at the back of the club: watching a group of 19 year olds trying to change the world.”

This is really beautiful. I love R.E.M., but I’m not a fanatic. This nearly made me tear up. View Larger

As long as I can remember I have listened to R.E.M., thank you Robyn, so as an Army wife, when our political views differed it was hard. I eventually setteled for agreeing to disagree. I can even laugh when Michael Makes a crack about Bush. Talk about the passion right?

I had never heard this, and it was kinda brilliant. Coldplay and Michael Stipe doing a BBC radio interview. Love how these two bands (two of my all-time favorite musical entities) had so much mutual love and respect for each other.

Michael Stipe is still awesome

I caught Michael Stipe on Jimmy Fallon last night, completely by accident.  I turned it on just as Jimmy was introducing him.  During the course of the interview, Michael and Jimmy had a staring contest, ran through a slew of silly double entendres, and talked about the new album and the videos that will go along with each song.  Michael mentioned Snow Patrol, Editors, and U2 in one sentence.  Then, he talked about the re-imagining of My Own Private Idaho he’s working on with James Franco.  I love this man.  Can’t wait for the new album.  Is it too much to hope R.E.M. might headline ACL this year? :D

Also, note to self: DVR Jimmy Fallon.  Michael was followed by Lykke Li, and every other time I’ve caught just a minute of the show, he’s had a musical guest I love, an interesting interview, or he’s just being freaking hilariously adorable.

I literally had to cover my mouth to keep from screaming in my house full of sleeping people when I saw this.  MICHAEL STIPE performed “The Good Book” on stage with Tired Pony Friday night in NYC.

Coldplay Saturday Song of the Day- In the Sun (feat. Michael Stipe)

From the 2005 appearance on Austin City Limits with the always fabulous Mr. Michael Stipe.  I was lucky enough to see Coldplay headline ACL that year (my first time seeing them live) and it was amazing.  I love this little collaboration.
