Breckenridge, Colorado. June 2012
Back to life…
…back to reality.
Got home late last night from our Colorado Adventure. My family (my husband, 6 yo daughter, and 4 yo son, and I) spent 6 days in a mountain wonderland with some of our best friends- 2 other couples and their collective five 4-8 year old children. Though it may seem unlikely given the adult to child ratio, we had an amazing time.
We stayed at our friends’ jaw-dropping Breckenridge time share that is perched on a mountain; roughly 10,500 feet up. The elevation of Austin is something like 480 feet, so it took a good day or so for all of us to adjust to the elevation (altitude sickness is a real thing, ya’ll), but once we got over being winded after climbing three steps, we were all good. We: went rafting down the Colorado River; went hiking here, there, and everywhere; went down an Alpine Slide; rode a chairlift and a gondola; played in snow; played with chipmunks; relaxed; and generally basked in the perfect weather.
The adults cooked fabulous food, played card games and dominoes, and chatted while the kids kept themselves occupied. We couldn’t have asked for better company.
The best thing for me was seeing my kids try new things and really enjoy themselves. When I was a kid, my family took all sorts of crazy road trips all over the country. Those are some of the best and happiest memories I have of my childhood. While we didn’t have to road trip it this time, I was so happy to see my kids start to make the same kinds of memories my siblings and I did. Can’t wait to do it again.
