Curve Away

I'm Jen, a 30-something, music-loving mommy living in the coolest city in Texas.

About this blog:
Music, life, and more music. I love all kinds of music, but my taste seems to be more alternative/indie/folkish these days. That said, my favorite bands are as mainstream as they come. Coldplay and Snow Patrol feature heavily on this blog, so if you're not a fan of them, you may want to avoid me on Saturdays and Sundays.

I also have a health/fitness/exercise blog: move-eat-behappy.tumblr.com . Check it out if you like. :)

My musical preferences, according to my last.fm: I'm into indie, alternative, rock, folk and acoustic, including:
Coldplay, Snow Patrol, Band of Horses, Mumford & Sons, The Strokes, Death Cab for Cutie, The Swell Season, The Beatles, Tired Pony, Arcade Fire, R.E.M., Muse, The Avett Brothers, Stars, The Civil Wars, Metric, Ra Ra Riot, Travis, Noah And The Whale, Freelance Whales, Quiet Company, Florence + The Machine, Two Door Cinema Club, Vampire Weekend, Iron & Wine, The National, U2, Blind Pilot, Keane, Andrew Bird, Editors, Damien Rice, Ray LaMontagne, Phoenix, Glen Hansard, Fleet Foxes, The Shins, Jeff Buckley, Radiohead, The xx, Feist, Broken Bells, The Temper Trap, Spoon, The Sundays, The Black Keys, English Chamber Orchestra, Imogen Heap, Regina Spektor, The Cure.

Popping in

Well, I’ve been on and off (mostly off) tumblr these last few weeks, and when I am on, it’s just a quick scroll through my dash. My husband was laid off and has been home and COMPLETELY HOGGING the computer while looking for another job or some shit like that. ;) We are trying not to get too stressed about it. He’s highly intelligent and chock-full of skills, so we’re hoping he’ll find something worthy of his substantial abilities sooner rather than later. But in the meantime, yes, he’s on the computer basically all day, and I have an aversion to posting to tumblr from my phone, so, I’ll probably be mostly quiet for the next few weeks.

I’ll post when I can (like now), but in the meantime, send us some “find-an-awesome-job-soon” positive vibes, would ya? x

Sorry for the sudden influx of posts. I haven’t been on in a while, I have a ton of liked posts I wanted to reblog, and my whole family is soundly sleeping at 10 pm. It’s a perfect storm.

Endless List of Christmas ( Movies and TV )

How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966)  “He puzzled and puzzed till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before: maybe Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. Maybe Christmas, perhaps… means a little bit more.”

Watched this with my family tonight, including my very reluctant 5 year old son. I think he was somewhat afraid of the Grinch (I blame that damn Jim Carrey movie), and he really didn’t want to watch it. I managed to convince him to sit with me and watch, and he did. He giggled at all the appropriate times and loved the dog, Max. And when it was over he said, “Mama, I like the Grinch!”

Snow Patrol Day in Austin, 11/08/12

So yesterday was a crazy but awesome day. Started off with a pre-school field trip to the fire station with my son’s class, and ended with me taking a picture with Pablo from Snow Patrol.

I have been fairly AWOL from tumblr over the past couple of months, due mainly to being really busy with family and friends over the summer. I’ve done tons of fun stuff, and am now a bit sad that it’s coming to an end. Tomorrow, my daughter returns to school, and I return to the land of 6:30 wake-ups and schedules set by someone other than me. Don’t get me wrong, I will definitely enjoy the kid-free moments I have, but I will also miss lazing about with them and enjoying the day as it unfolds. At any rate, I’ll likely be on tumblr more often starting this or next week, so you all have *that* to look forward to. ;)

May the Force be with me

My daughter turns 7 on the 25th and has (very) recently decided she wants a Star Wars themed party. Now, while I think it’s very cool we’re finally moving beyond the world of pretty, pink princesses, I am a little concerned for a couple of reasons. One, she still wants it “girlish”- meaning, an emphasis on Princess Leia- but, the “girlish” bits of Star Wars are woefully underrepresented in the world of party supplies. And Two, due to Reason Number One, I’m gonna have to do a lot of this shit enjoyable stuff on my own. And I have just about 3 weeks until her birthday party.

Thankfully, the internets have sprung to my rescue. Etsy and Pinterest are crazy with Star Wars party ideas… I just have to try to adapt them to our “girlish” needs. But, that means that I have been up late scouring websites for ideas that are affordable and doable (by me). As a result, I have gone to bed with visions of Star Wars dancing in my head every night this week.

No doubt your level of interest in this is infinitesimal, so please excuse the Star Wars related posts I make here over the next couple of weeks as I try to throw a kick ass party for my kid. ;)

In short

  • Yay for the Supreme Court! And a big, huge Yay for Chief Justice Roberts for demonstrating that mindless partisanship doesn’t have to always be the order of the day in American politics.
  • Hopefully, the law will continue to stand and will prove to be effective. fingers crossed.
  • Had an awesome birthday dinner out with my best girls last night. Excellent food, excellent beverages and outstanding company. I’m so lucky to have a pack of women around me that love and support each other the way we do.
  • Am currently in the throes of huge Coldplay obsession (again). Want to consume ALL THE COLDPLAY.
  • Need to write my little review of the Dallas show, but somehow, I’m not able to yet. Will try to do it by tomorrow, so I don’t forget anything.

Coldplay Withdrawl

At this time last night, I was in a state of Coldplay-induced euphoria, watching them live for my first (and only) MX tour show. It was an incredible show, and I need to do a whole nice write up for it. But right now, I’m just a little sad that they’re playing again a couple (hundred) miles from my house and I’m here and not there. This feeling will be repeated again on Monday and Tuesday when they play in Houston. Ah, well. I have several friends who are there tonight, and I hope they enjoy it as much as I did!
